Body Image and Models

Body Image and Models

We have compared body images and models with the two countries:

The teenagers in Denmark and Poland are too concerned of their body. Especially teenage girls discover all the bad and ugly parts of their body. They look at themselves in the mirror and think for instance: “Why do I have so big thighs, damn my nose is big, why is my hair so receding, omg my stomach is floppy. Why am I that ugly? I am going to be single forever.” This might sound a little bit extreme, but these thoughts can lead to eating disorders. A state of mental illness. We think that the social medias are a huge part of the problem with eating disorders. The models showed in the medias and fashion magazines are too skinny in a sick way. An example is the Brazilian model called Ana Carolina Reston, who died of anorexia as a 22-year old because of her model career. This is not a beautiful and healthy body.

Everywhere young people go today they get reminded of how perfect they should look. When you walk around in the city you see big posters with beautiful and flawless models. And they compare themselves to the models they see in the everyday life. This is not healthy either mentally or physically. You can't compare yourself to anybody but yourself.

Models are often talked about by the whole world and their looks are judged and admired by the young people. It can cause serious problems with their concept of beauty and perfect body. Models’ influence on young girls and boys may be crucial while growing up. What people don’t seem to understand is that the pretty faces they see on a magazine cover have gone through a lot of editing. Teenagers see a model’s body and wonder why they don’t have the same and it causes depression and eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia. These are very dangerous diseases which may induce suicides.

Denmark's Next Top Model

Denmark’s next Topmodel is a show send in television, and several people especially young people watch this show. This show is a competition between many contestants. They all fight for the title “Denmark’s next Topmodel”. Aside from the title the winner also gets a model contract with the model agency called “Unique Models”.

In this show the contestants gets tested in for instance photo-shoots and catwalks, they have to be capable of as a model. There are usually 4 judges who individually are in charge of some trials the models have to get through. The judges are not afraid of saying what they mean and they don’t hide anything for the contestants. This can be hard to watch because all the models in this show seems perfectly fine to us viewers, so you can easily get the thought: “If she is not good enough, then what am I?” Because again we compare ourselves to other people and we especially compare ourselves to people of the same age.

Poland's Next Top Model

Poland’s Next Top Model is a reality show produced by Rockstar ordered by TVN. The premier of the program took place on August 8th, 2010. It is based on America's Next Top Model. So far, there have been five seasons. Until 2013, only women could take part in the program. However, since 2014, both men and women have been allowed to be in the program.

The jury seeks 50 of the best models in Poland by holding castings in a several cities. The ones that are lucky enough are put through various tests. In the end, the jury picks the best 13 candidates. Models are put in the Model House where they live for the next few months and compete for the title of Poland's Top Model. This requires a lot of effort. Sometimes they need to lose weight or completely change the way they look. The program is usually watched by young teenagers who are heavily influenced by the opinions of the jury and what the candidates say themselves. These opinions are critical, most of the time, to the young teens' way of being.
