The school system in Denmark

The school system in Denmark

For how long do you go to efterskole?
The efterskole last for year. However, it is a year you choose to take after the obligatory 10 years at a school. Some might think: ”why would you take one additional year in school?” We think many of us choose this extra year because, we did not feel that we were ready or mature enough to start these three college-like years.

How many students are there on the school?
There are about 180 pupils on the school, it can be a quite difficult to be around that many people all the time, because it can and is hard to get to know everybody. It is very hard because you are always together with someone, and sometimes you need some time alone.

What is the difference between a normal english boarding school or the efterskole?
The Efterskole is a unique Danish residential school, where students from the ages from 14 to 18 can choose to spend one or two years. There are 250 schools throughout Denmark. In a normal English boarding school you have to wear the school uniform, whereas on an efterskole you can wear what you want to wear.

The special relationship between the students
One of the special things about the efterskole and maybe one of the reasons why many choose to go to efterskole is the special bond you get with the other students. You get to know them much better than if you just were classmates. On the efterskole you are together with them all the time you have classes together and you do sports together. However, this can also be hard, because you are together with someone almost all the time and it can be hard not to have some private space-time.

Teacher-student relationship
One of the things that is part of the efterskole is the teacher-student relationship. The teacher is responsible for both teaching and supervision outside of school hours. This means that teachers and students are together all day from the time the students wake up until they go to bed. This often engenders a close, personal and non-formal relationship between students and teachers. Whereas you get a more formal relationship to the teachers on a boarding school.

Subjects and exams
Most efterskoler offer the same subjects and final examinations as the public schools, but many focus on special subjects like physical education, music or theatre, or offer various kinds of special education. Our efterskole has a special focus on sports, and gymnastics.

What are you allowed to do, and what are you not allowed to?
When it is bedtime you are not allowed to go outside your room. You are not allowed to smoke at the school or taking drugs and so on. You have to behave properly. You have to get up in the morning, otherwise the teachers will come and wake you up. You are not allowed to drink alcohol at the school. All the lessons you have, you need to meet up, also if you are injured, you have to say it to the teacher.

Vivild efterskole (VGI)
(It is an abbreviation for Vivild Gymnastik og Idrætsefterskole)

The school, thinks a lot about, to have a beautiful, nice and clean school
The area of the school is quite big, we think it is a place, we can feel safe, nice and there is a good mood. VGI is being modernized and it is like a little village, in a little well-functioning town. Even though it is in the countryside.
There is actually a bit life in the little town. Supermarket, pizzeria, medical practice, dentist, public school and a well-run sports club

The school position be situated close to a nice beach - About 5 km.
